Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the JFA:

How did JFA get started?

The Justice For All Email Network was founded by Justin Dart, Jr., Mark Smith, Fred Fay, and Becky Ogle in 1995. After several years of national leadership and advocacy with JFA, the co-founders decided to pass the baton to the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). On July 26, 2001, AAPD formally became the host of the Justice For All Email Network. AAPD is committed to sustaining the well-known listserv and fulfilling the JFA co-founders’ mission of enhancing grassroots advocacy. AAPD strives to make JFA the preeminent email information network in the disability community.

What sort of content goes out?

JFA both shares information and issues action alerts to the disability community.

Action Alerts ask disability advocates to take specific actions, such as contacting members of Congress or the Presidential Administration, on time-sensitive matters, often involving proposed legislation. Advocates should do their best to take the recommended action so that the voice of people with disabilities can be heard loud and proud.

Shared information may include major news articles, press releases, communications from the White House and various federal agencies, comments and guest columns from JFA subscribers, and other materials the JFA Moderator deems appropriate.

In general, the JFA Moderator will select information that furthers the goals of the ADA: equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency.

NOTE: Information circulated over the JFA Listserv does not necessarily express the views of AAPD. In many instances, the JFA Moderator will circulate arguments from both sides of a given issue to promote dialogue in the disability community. As a service of AAPD, the JFA listserv is non-partisan. While the JFA Moderator may post information from time-to-time expressing partisan viewpoints regarding disability issues, the JFA Moderator will promote balance in selecting such items for circulation.

How do I submit info to JFA?

AAPD welcomes advocates' submissions of content for dissemination on JFA - both Action Alerts and other information. To submit an article for consideration by the JFA Moderator for dissemination, please email the , and observe the following guidelines:

  1. The subject heading of the email must read, in all caps: "JFA SUBMISSION."
  2. JFA submissions must be in the body of the email; attachments will not be opened.
  3. The text of JFA submissions must be clean (e.g., without any indentations and extra marks from being forwarded) and formatted as plain text only (e.g., no symbols such as bullets; nothing in bold or italics).

NOTE: The JFA Moderator reserves the right to edit submissions for clarity and length, provided the original tone and content is not substantially altered.

How do I contact the Moderator?

Anne Sommers, Policy Counsel at AAPD, is the JFA Moderator. You can contact her via email. However, please note that due to volume of emails, the JFA Moderator cannot reply to every email received, nor can she provide any direct services of guidance regarding personal concerns. If you are interested in a referral to organizations that may be able to assist you one-on-one, please contact the AAPD main office at (800) 840-8844 or .

How do I access the JFA archives?

AAPD maintains a comprehensive, searchable archive of every JFA email generated from 1995 to October 2007. Due to technology upgrades to JFA in the Fall of 2007, most material disseminated over JFA since October 2007 will be maintained categorically and by month on the JFActivist Blog, which is also searchable. Event announcements and job announcements will be maintained on the AAPD website for as long as the announcements are time-relevant.

What is the JFActivist blog?
Justice for All Activist logo

JFActivist, the Justice For All blog, was launched in Fall 2007 as an enhancing, interactive supplement to the JFA email listserv. JFActivist will strive to be a cross-disability, cross-country town hall meets water cooler, where advocates can come to:

Engage in discussions
Exchange ideas
Share in victories
Get mad then motivated by defeats
…And take action!

JFActivist will expand upon articles and commentary provided over the JFA listserv as snippets with additional and related information, pictures, and action items and will also feature guest columns from disability leaders and grassroots advocates on a variety of disability issues.

Advocates are encouraged to submit comments to daily blog posts and join the discussion!
