'Everybody Wins with the ADA' Contest

In one month, our community will be celebrating a milestone in the struggle for equal rights for every citizen with a disability -- the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Again this year, Justice For All is encouraging celebrations of the birthday of the ADA by sponsoring the 'Everybody Wins with the ADA' Contest. Since this anniversary marks the first decade for this landmark legislation, we are hopeful that literally hundreds of events will be held across the nation in every state.

Holding such celebrations will not only help us emphasize the win-win nature of the ADA, but also to counter the persistent attacks on the ADA (such as the continued Supreme Court cases which could undermine our ADA rights).

Events this year will also help compliment and heighten the positive impact of the Spirit of ADA Torch Relay.

Activities you might want to consider sponsoring include holding a press conference about the ADA or the Relay, encouraging public officials to issue supporting proclamations about the ADA, conducting a mini-relay in your community, holding a birthday party or other recognition ceremony, or sponsoring any other similar activity to bring attention to this landmark event.

The organization sponsoring each of the ADA events will receive a "winner" certificate (suitable for framing) from Justice For All and various other 'neat' memorabilia.

Just as with the ADA, EVERYBODY'S A WINNER!

Remember, whether it's a huge march and rally or just two or three advocates visiting a public official's office to discuss our issues, we should use the ADA's birthday to promote our message of empowerment and equal access to the American dream.

*Right NOW*, please send us:

1. A brief description of your planned event - including the main sponsor, time, place, nature, focus.

2. The name, mailing address and phone number of a contact person for the event.

*AFTER the event*, please send us:

1. A brief two or three sentence summary of your event including how many people attended, the event's media coverage, noteworthy occurrences, notable attendees, etc.

Please don't consider this bragging or a waste of time. The good news of your advocacy will not only influence colleagues in every state and nation, but also help us build the momentum we need to realize the true promise of the ADA.
