Rolling Justice 2000

People with Disabilities Organize Unprecedented Relay Across Pennsylvania

Rolling Justice 2000, an epic relay that will culminate in Philadelphia on July 29, 2000, kicked off on July 5, 2000 in Erie, Scranton and Pittsburgh. This relay, which will include over thirty Pennsylvania towns, villages and cities by the time it reaches Philadelphia, has one main goal; affordable, accessible transportation for all citizens of Pennsylvania who have disabilities, no matter where they live, rural, suburban, or urban.

So far, Rolling Justice has rolled through Erie, Edinboro, Mercer County from the Crawford Countyline down to Mercer, Oil City, Brookville, Dubois, Clearfield, Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Altoona, Hollidaysburg, Bedford, Everett, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport and Montoursville.

On Monday, July 17, Rolling Justice 2000 will roll through Lewistown, PA, escorted by the local Touring Friends Motorcycle club. The local volunteer fire department has planned a picnic for the Justice Rollers in their social hall. The Lewistown Mayor and State Representative Benninghoff will march with the Justice Rollers through town. That afternoon, the Touring Friends will escort the Justice Rollers to Mifflintown to pass the baton. Rolling Justice 2000 will be in Shamokin Dam on Tuesday, July 18; Shippensburg on Wednesday, July 19, Carlisle on July 20, and Harrisburg on July 21, 2000. The Harrisburg event has strong support from the Ridge Administration; over ten officials from PennDOT are planning to march through the streets of Harrisburg side by side with the Justice Rollers. This all starts in the Capitol Rotunda at 11:00 am.

York will host Rolling Justice 2000 on July 24, and will attempt to take Greyhound buses into Lancaster, which will host Rolling Justice 2000 on the 25. Reading has the honor of hosting Rolling Justice 2000 on the 10th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. A blow-out birthday celebration for the ADA is planned.

With a planned rally, Newtown Square will be the staging area for July 28, and on July 29, Justice Rollers from all corners of Pennsylvania will march through the streets of Philadelphia to Penn Treaty Park. The march begins at the Clarion Suites Hotel at 8:30 am, and will reach Penn Treaty Park at 10:30 am. In Penn Treaty park, Pennsylvania's Rolling Justice 2000 will meet up with the Spirit of the ADA Torch Relay, that is linking 24 major cities across the United States with Philadelphia. Ginny Thornburgh is among the many famous speakers who plan on speaking at the Philadelphia event.
